In this tutorial i will teach you how to best use the new Vibrance tool in Photoshop CS4 and why it is crucial especially with images that have people+interesting backgrounds in them. I will also cover a few extra tweeks to make the image more impactual. The tutorial requires you to have a basic knowledge of Photoshop and that you have a copy of Photoshop CS4 as this is a new feature and will not work with prior versions of the software.
Step 1
Open image in photoshop you can use any image that has a person in the fore-ground and either trees or buildings in the background. To use the image in this tutorial just right click on the image and then save to hard drive.
Step 2
Double click on the background layer in the layers panel and a window asking you to name the layer will appear leave this as layer 0 and click ok to unlock the image to be edited.

Step 3
Now go to the window menu and open the Adjustments panel, this is a new pannel in Photoshop CS4 where from now on you will be able to handle all your adjustments in 1 easy to use panel.
Step 4
Now select the Vibrance tool from within the adjustments panel
You will now see these two toggle bars along with numeric indicators of the amount plus and minus of vibrance or saturation to your image.
Saturation works the same as normal saturation but has been placed here for you to balance it with vibrance to create much better effects than just saturation on its own used to be able to do.
Heres a image with saturation turned up to full as you can see it negatively affects the girl in this image turning her into a orange and this is what we want to avoid.
In this example just the vibrance is turned up to +100, see how it protects the skin tones of the girl but still adds ( vibrance
) to the rest of the image mainly the ground and fallen leaves.
Step 5
We do want to add some saturation to the image so notch this up to +10
Heres a close up of the image just with adding vibrance and a tiny bit of saturation just so much so that it doesn’t harm the image. Of course we are not fully done yet as there are still a few things that need clearing up before the image is of eye catching quality.
Step 6
From the tools bar on the left grab the blur tool
Step 7
In the tool options bar at the top in Photoshop CS4 set the brush to size 45, Mode to Normal, Strength to 50% and Sample All Layers un-ticked.
Step 8
We want to get rid of the fuzziness in the background, go over all greenery avoiding the edges and branches using the blur tool.
So far so good this how we should be looking
Step 9
Now select the Dodge tool from the tool bar on the left inside Photoshop CS4
Step 10
In the tool options bar at the top in Photoshop CS4 set the brush to size 27, Range to Shadows, Exposure to 30% and Protect Tones to ticked.
Step 11
The girls legs are more tanned than the rest of her body just do a few strokes with the Dodge tool to lighten up the legs a little so they match the arm a bit more.

I love the simplicity of this tutorial, it’s easy to do and it levels up almost every image taken with a camera.
